I'm always open to discussing new opportunities, collaborations, and speaking engagements.

Walmart
Transforming Fortune #1 to an AI-first enterprise
2024
I worked directly with the C-Suite on both vision and MVP initiatives to bring AI into every aspect of how Walmart operates omnichannel retail, from identifying product trends to automating inventory and pricing.
The problem
Walmart takes in $1.5B+ revenue a day in the US alone across 58 departments and a catalog of 4M+ products. Yet the company operated on dated software, spreadsheets and emails prone to errors and inefficiencies. At the same time, ecommerce was growing at 24% a quarter but was operating as a siloed business and lacked the technical means to operate as a truly omnichannel organization.

A broad scope of work
The team I led was responsible for software that covered planning, execution and mangement of merchandising across all departments in stores and online.

My role as a leader
I was responsible for defining a vision and execution for numerous 0-1 products that redefine how the world’s biggest retailer’s merchandising operates more efficiently and strategically in merchandising - the selection, acquisition, sale and distribution of products in 4800 stores and online at walmart.com and the Walmart App. Leading a team of 12 designers, a user researcher, and a senior design manager, I worked to understand the complexities of how the business is run and empowered the team to leverage AI in its early days to automate and assist the company in everything from trend forecasting to keeping products on the shelves and in stock at affordable prices for everyday consumers.

An operating system for retail
We conducted listening sessions with merchants, operators and leaders across all departments to create Walmart's first OS for running the business - product assortment, distribution, business analytics, and more.

A proactive AI assistant
I advocated for an AI that can come to the end user with urgent situations that required attention. In this scenario, the AI assistant sends a push notification to a replenishment supplier that inventory is running at critically low levels due to inclement weather forecasts and proactively offers to move inventory from nearby stores to mitigate the issue.

Omnichannel Merchandising
We created end to end experiences that for the first time allowed the company to promote products instore and online through the same interface, with a unified strategy around seasonal events like Back to School.

AI-guided intelligence
We worked with teams to understand how they made decisions around what products to buy and sell, and found ways to operationalize AI to provide more nuanced and localized insight on local trends such as product and style preferences at a regional level.

Supercharging collaborative workflows
I ran workshops with our design, product and operations teams to surface opportunities to further utilizing AI to assist in recommending layouts for in-store product placement and assortment strategy, with the ability for human users to make modifications to the plans based on historical and predictive data.

A bias towards insights and actions
Instead of simply showing raw data, I stood up design principles around biasing towards designing software that delivers Next Best Actions for high value opportunities, culminating in heavily AI-assisted workflows that made important, high value work so fast and easy, they could be done on a mobile device.

The outcome
I led the team to launch a couple of major firsts. One: the first go-to enterprise software that covered the full end-to-end responsibilities of merchandising at Walmart. Two: the first AI enterprise software, capable of not only generating reports but taking actions on behalf of the user, from pricing automation to surfacing opportunities and issues before they arise. Beyond that, I built a world-class design team to tackle these challenges, turning around a team to deliver what our Chief Design Officer referred to as “some of the best work to come out of this team” and setting a new bar for “consumer-grade enterprise software” that tangibly saved saved the company both time and money.
